A Night That Felt Like Returning to Someone You Once Knew: Greyson Chance’s The Gold Tour

If you were online in a time before TikTok was the blueprint, you’ll probably remember Greyson Chance— the 12-year-old kid who made going viral on YouTube a thing with his iconic ‘Paparazzi’ cover. A moment that transformed a “6th grade chorus performance/talent show kinda thing” into an overnight sensation.

The last time I saw Greyson Chance was back in 2016, on what felt to be a random rooftop tucked away from the city. So The Gold Tour last night, felt less like a concert and more like a long-overdue reunion— that’s 9 years in the making!

The night opened up with Singapore’s very own Mila Bea whose smooth, velvety sound and infectious energy warmed up the crowd. She mentioned she was performing a couple unreleased tracks; though to be honest, most of her set blurred together in the moment—but it definitely set the stage for Greyson Chance

And before you know it, an intro monologue started playing on the screen— Greyson’s face filling up the stage, staring straight into the camera. It perked the audience up, like this little piece of visual storytelling pulling everyone in before he even stepped out. And then he did— Greyson Chance finally walked up on stage and the room was buzzing.

The set opened with ‘High Waisted’, ‘Nobody’ and ‘Boots’— Greyson full of confidence and emotion, easing the crowd in. By the time he got into ‘Dancing Next To Me’, fans were fully warmed up and feeding off his energy.

From there, he moved on to songs from his 2019 Portraits Album that felt more intimate and introspective: ‘Timekeeper’, ‘Shut up’, ‘White Roses’ , ’Yours’ and ‘Season Nineteen’.

Then came a lift in the energy as he transitioned to fan-favourite tracks— songs that always hit no matter how many years have passed. His latest single ‘Savanna’ was one of those moments that felt like a quiet emotional peak, tender and beautifully delivered.

Somewhere along the set, he shared how earlier this year he was hospitalised after his lungs collapsed, and later developed pneumonia— and how that affected him. You could tell that everyone in the room felt the weight of that moment as the room fell quiet. Hearing him talk about that, and then go right back into performing with so much heart, just made everything hit a little harder.

He closed the night with ‘Sunshine and City Lights’, which honestly had the entire room singing at the top of their lungs — a full-circle high that wrapped the night perfectly.
